Boat CE Marking Services

There's a wealth of detailed information available on the site, both in the public pages and our info centre (for registered users), but we appreciate you might be looking for some quick answers.

Below, we address some common questions and provide links to the related text, to get you the infornation you need, as easily as possible.  Since most of our clients use us for assessing used boats we assume this is you.  If not, please call us direct.

What is CE and does it apply to me?

If you're importing a recreational craft from outside the EEA then you will need to have the craft CE marked before you place it on the market (if selling) or in the water (if using).  There are some exemptions. Click on the links below for:

When and Where should CE be done?

For boats routed via the UK or Holland, there is no advantage to undertaking the CE marking in the USA.  For boats routed though other EEA countries it is wise to have the CE marking done in the USA, so that the process is complete before the boat arrives.

We offer CE marking services worldwide.

What is the CE process?

Each boat must be personally inspected, on behalf of the EU Notified Body.  From inspection to completion, of the relevent paperwork, normally takes between one and three weeks depending on workload, both for Gablemarine and our Notified Body.  Click the following links for:

What about emissions?

Since 2006, emissions have played a significant part in the CE marking of craft and can represent the single greatest cost where conformity issues exist.  Generally speaking, few if any engines of 10 years or more are likely to meets the emissions requirements and must thus be replaced to achieve conformity.  This is particularly the case for diesel engines.  Click the following links for:

What are the costs involved?

Our quote includes travel, certification fees and other expenses incurred in making the assessment.  We do not charge extra.  What we quote is what you pay.

A small sports boat starts at around GBP 1,350 rising to GBP 1,750 for a mid sized sports cruiser.  Displacement motor boats and sailing yachts are more, largely due to the complex systems onboard and the desire to claim conformity in the higher (A/B) design categories. What other works may be required?

Inevitably there will be some non-conformities to address as well as other alternations which though not required are sensible. Click the following links for:

As a 'private buyer' with little knowledge of importing a boat from the US to Europe, Gable Marine helped me through all the technical aspects and legal jargon.  They were generous with their advice and time pre purchase, which enabled me to modify the boat in the US (cheaply) to enable the EU certification to take place smoothly. Bilge pump, and battery fittings etc etc.  I would happily use Gable Marine again and am happy to recommend them to anyone else in need of their services.
